Physical Landscapes and Land Use Index

a. physical landscapes
The following topics should be studied within the context of glaciated uplands and upland limestone areas.

1. a study of major rock types:-
· igneous
· metamorphic
· sedimentary

2. distribution of landscape types:-
· glaciated upland
· upland limestone

3. physical processes shaping the landscape
· weathering - physical and chemical
· erosion, transport and deposition - water, wind and ice

4. resulting landscape features:-
· glaciated upland - corrie; tarn; pyramidal peak; arete;
U-shaped valley; truncated spur; hanging valley; ribbon lake
· upland limestone - limestone pavements; clint; gryke; swallow hole; intermittent drainage; caverns; stalactites; stalagmites; gorges

b. land use
The following topics should be studied within the context of glaciated uplands and upland limestone areas.

5. the scale, nature and pattern of demand on a variety of land uses. At least three land uses from the following list should be studied for each of the two types of upland area:-
· farming
· forestry
· industry
· military
· recreation and leisure
· water

6. at least two examples of land use conflict from each upland area, e.g.:-
· farming / forestry
· industry / tourism
· skiing / conservation

7. the role of public and voluntary bodies, e.g.:-
· country / national park authorities
· Scottish National Heritage and other environmental agencies
