ribbon loch
description - This is a long loch found on the floor of a u-shaped valley.
explanation - This feature is formed where part of the floor of a u - shaped valley is flooded. A rock bar (of harder rock) or a terminal moraine is often responsible for damming up the present day drainage.
diagram - Examine Diagram 3.6a.

misfit stream
description - This is a river or stream flowing along the floor of a u - shaped valley.
explanation - This is called a misfit stream as it could not possibly have eroded the large valley it occupies.
diagram - Examine Diagram 3.6a.

waterfall Streams flowing from hanging valleys often form waterfalls when they plunge into the main u-shaped valley.
Examine Diagram 3.6a.

alluvial fan When streams plunging from hanging valleys reach the main valley floor they are unable to carry their load of boulders and sand as their speed is drastically reduced. This forms a fan - shaped mound of alluvium at the foot of the waterfall.

scree This is layer of irregular shaped angular boulders deposited on the hillside as a result of frost shattering.
