A1.

a. flat floodplain
b. presence of ox - bow lakes
c. meandering river
d. gentle river gradient
e. gentle valley slopes

A2

a. narrow river
b. narrow floodplain
c. valley sides are too high
d. meanders are too small

A3

a. they could measure river depth along the line A - B every so often (e.g. metre) this would give them an accurate cross section of the river at this point.
b. they could use floats to measure the speed of the river at the inside and outside of the bend to see if water flows faster on the outside of a meander.
c. they cold photograph / sketch the slopes on the inside and outside of the meander to show the contrast between the erosion (river cliff) and deposition slopes (see Diagram2.6g).
d. they could measure river width at several points to see if the river became wider as it flowed downstream or if it was wider on a straight section or a meander.

A4

a. erosion takes place on the outside of a bend where the river speed is fastest. The bank of the river is undercut and the river is deepest at this point.
b. deposition takes place on the inside of a bend where the river speed is slowest and it is less able to carry its load. The river is shallowest at this point.
