Air Temperature

We measure the temperature of the air in degrees Celsius (ºC) using a thermometer.

At a weather station 4 thermometers are kept in a white slatted box called a Stevenson Screen.

This screen shields the thermometers from the sun, rain, snow etc but allows them to measure the true air temperature.

The 4 thermometers inside this screen are:-

1 Maximum thermometer - this measures the highest temperature of the day

2 Minimum thermometer - this measures the lowest temperature of the day.

We can work out the average temperature for the day by adding these 2 readings and dividing by two.

ie Average Daily temperature = Maximum Temperature + Minimum Temperature divided by 2

To work out the average monthly temperature, add up the average temperature for each day in the month and divide by the number of days in the month.

3 Dry bulb thermometer - this measures air temperature.

4 Wet bulb thermometer - this shows us the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere.

We use a line graph to record the average temperature. To do this we simply mark the temperature in the middle of the column for each month. We then join the dots with straight lines eg :-

We can also show average temperatures on maps using lines which we call isotherms eg :-
